Maz: David you’re a great player and a very unpredictable one too!! We’ll definitely play again !!

David: An epic game with Maz on a cloudy Thursday afternoon at Battersea Park! Despite having seven match-points, I somehow managed to lose this game which lasted two and a half hours and was played over three different courts! But Maz deserves a lot of credit for demonstrating superb resolve and a killer instinct under huge pressure! I won the opening set with relative ease and there was little sign of the drama to come! I quickly established a 2-1 lead. Although Maz broke my serve in the next game, I clinched the next four games in a row to take the overall lead. Strangely, the second set was also one-sided but this time in Maz’s favour. The score was tied at 2-2 after the opening four games but Maz took control and won four successive games to force a deciding set! I made a strong start in the decider and looked on course for my first win of the season when I led 5-2. I raced into a 0-40 lead and a victory looked inevitable but Maz had other ideas! He sent down an ace to make it 15-40 and then won the next two points to level up at deuce. I squandered a further two match-points before Maz eventually made it 5-4. I had two additional match-points at 40-30 and advantage in the 10th game but once again Maz recovered and levelled up the set at 5-5. He made it 6-5 and then led 15-30 when we ran out of time and had to leave the court! We continued on another court at Battersea Park which wasn’t being used. Maz won the next point to lead 15-40 and he had two match-points for the first time! However, it was my turn to show my fighting qualities and I won the next four points to force a deciding tie-break. I went 3-0 ahead but we had to move to yet another court! Unfortunately, I lost the wind from my sails and Maz finally turned the tables, winning seven points in a row to secure a memorable triumph! Well played Maz! Obviously, I’m gutted to lose my fourth match in a row and seventh in all competitions this season but you never gave up and fought admirably for every point! I really enjoyed meeting you and I hope we will meet again. Maybe we should book three hours next time!
