David: A superb match with Tom on a cloudy and pleasant Friday morning at Tooting Common! My losing streak at this venue continued but the match could have gone either way after two compelling sets! The first set was extremely tight and we had a number of cat-and-mouse rallies! Tom regularly attacked at the net, while I valiantly attempted to outmanoeuvre him from the baseline! The score was locked at 2-2 after the first four games but Tom broke the deadlock and extended his lead to 4-2. This proved to be crucial as we both held serve for the next four games and Tom claimed the opening set! The pattern of holds continued in a tense second set and the score was tied at 1-1! After six holds in a row, Tom finally broke my serve to lead 2-1 but I responded well and made it 2-2! Tom edged 3-2 ahead with a third successive break of serve and then held to establish a commanding 4-2 lead! Haunted from the same scoreline in the first set, I knew I needed to raise my game! I fought hard and levelled the set at 4-4 and a grandstand finish was on the cards! Unfortunately for me, it didn’t materialise as Tom ruthlessly won the next two games to clinch a deserved victory! Well played Tom! You had ice in your veins at the net and clinically dispatched a number of brilliant volleys beyond my reach! Although I managed to hit passing shots on several occasions, you won the lion’s share of points at the net! The best man won and I need to come up with a solution for our next meeting! In the meantime, best of luck in the rest of the league!
